2022 Last Year in Purple for Dalvin Cook?

Before we get this article started, let me state this. I love me some Dalvin Cook. He’s arguably a top 3 running back in the NFL. His vision, shiftiness, and big play ability are second to none. He’s a huge part to the Vikings offense, and I know for a fact Kevin O’Connell is going to love him in his offense.

But let’s step back and look at the big picture. Dalvin is owed a huge amount of money after the 2022 season. He’s struggled to stay healthy, and it’s a big question whether you should even pay running backs top tier money. Alexander Mattison is a free agent after this season, so he will most likely be moving on as well, so do the Vikings feel comfortable letting both Cook and Mattison go after 2022? It’s hard to say. A lot of people I trust with football evaluation, LOVE Ty Chandler out of North Carolina. They think he can be a three down back in this league. Pair him with Kene Nwangwu and those two guys could be the future.

Even if the Vikings love both Chandler and Nwangwu, I still find it unlikely the Vikings move on with a star running back who could thrive in the KOC system. I can see Cook taking a pay cut and accepting a team friendly restructure of his contract. Either way, it’ll be interesting to watch unfold.
